Year 9 Enquiries

Enquiry13 'What is development?'.

Students explore the wealth of countries according to their GDP per capita. They then compile a scatter graph in Excel to compare two development indicators for anumber of countries. Students complete a diagram of the Human Development Index, then analyse world maps of the HDI.

This enquiry consists of the following GeogITs;-

GeogIT1 Starters and;- Is the amount of money earned by a country in a year a good sign of how developed that country is ?

GeogIT2 How could we best compare economic with social indicators of development?

GeogIT3 Extension material- What is the Human Development Index? Describe where the following are to be found (i) The high human development countries (ii) The low human development countries, plus a plenary.

ASSESSMENT TARGET.

Enquiry14 'The global fashion industry'.

Students design a poster to show where a chosen 'Gap' or 'Nike' or 'Reebok' garment is made in relation to where the fashion companies headquarters are to be found. Students use the latest data to decide how developed the country of production is compared with the country that is the home of the fashion company. Students write a newspaper article (to include downloaded images) that answers the question 'Whose the fashion victim?'

This enquiry consists of the following GeogITs;-

GeogIT1 Starters and;- Where is my new jacket made??

GeogIT2 LEDC or MEDC? comparing where the fashion company is based with where the garments are made.

GeogIT3 Extension material- Whose the fashion victim? and plenary.

 ASSESSMENT TARGET.

Enquiry15  'Tourism- good or bad?'.

Students design, write and email home postcards that explain why Newquay and St Lucia are popular tourist destinations. Students go on to complete mind maps that identify ways that Newquay and St Lucia benefit and suffer from the effects of tourism.

This enquiry consists of the following GeogITs;- 

GeogIT1 Starters and;- Why is Newquay in Cornwall a popular tourist destination?

GeogIT2 Why is the island of St Lucia a popular tourist  destination?

GeogIT3 Extension material- In what ways do Newquay and St Lucia benefit and suffer from the effects of tourism? and plenary.

ASSESSMENT TARGET.

Enquiry16 'Virtual volcanoes and Internet earthquakes?'

Students research then annotate downloaded world maps to show the location of recently erupted volcanoes and recent major earthquakes. Students then explore the similarity in location between volcanoes and earthquakes and the fact that not all volcanoes are the same and not all earthquakes are the same.

This enquiry consists of the following GeogITs;-

GeogIT1 Starters and;- Where do volcanoes occur?

GeogIT2 Where do earthquakes occur?

GeogIT3 Extension material- Where do earthquakes and volcanoes occur? Are all volcanoes identical? Are all earthquakes identical? and plenary.

Enquiry17 'Mining on the Internet'.

Students compile and analyse a stacked area graph in Excel to show recent coal production in the UK. They then annotate a map of England to show coal mines that are currently open and compare the effects of coal mine closure in a UK region with a region of the USA.

This enquiry consists of the following GeogITs;-

GeogIT1 Starters and;- What has happened to coal production in the United Kingdom in recent years?

GeogIT2  Which coal mines in England are currently still open? How many mines were open in England 10 years ago?

GeogIT3 Extension material- How has the closure of coal mines in North Nottinghamshire affected the area? How has the closure of a coal mine at Powhatan Point, in the American state of Ohio affected the area? and plenary.

Enquiry18 'Local action, global effects'.

Students annotate a downloaded map of the River Rhine to highlight the river's main features. They also annotate annotate a downloaded satellite image of the River Rhine to show activities that can lead to the pollution of the river. Students complete a mind map to explain the work that has been done to clean the River Rhine

GeogIT1 Starters and;- Where is the River Rhine?

GeogIT2 What activities can pollute the River Rhine?

GeogIT3 Extension material- Despite the threat from pollution salmon have been caught by fishermen along the River Rhine since 1996. How has this been possible? and plenary.
